Directed by Academy Award® nominee Paul Schrader based on his original screenplay, Master Gardener follows Narvel Roth (award-winner Joel Edgerton), the meticulous horticulturist of Gracewood Gardens. He is as much devoted to tending the grounds of this beautiful and historic estate, to pandering to his employer, the wealthy dowager Mrs. Haverhill (three-time Academy Award® nominee Sigourney Weaver). When Mrs. Haverhill demands that he take on her wayward and troubled great-niece Maya (Quintessa Swindell) as a new apprentice, chaos enters Narvel’s spartan existence, unlocking dark secrets from a buried violent past that threaten them all.
Acclaimed producer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, songwriter, and vocalist Devonté Hynes dives deep into the enigmatic world of Master Gardener with the enchanting, atmospheric compositions that accompany Narvel Roth’s journey. Hynes’ masterfully crafted score amplifies the intensity and emotional depth of Shrader’s visionary storytelling and takes listeners on a musical journey that resonates with the essence of the film.
In collaboration with multi-talented singer-songwriter Mereba, Hynes has rearranged a transcendentrendition of S.G. Goodman’s folk ballad “Space and Time” – a track that was handpicked by Schrader for inclusion in the film. Following the film’s premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival – where Schrader was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement – the director ended his Masterclass speech with a quote from the song’s lyrics and how they tie in with the film’s themes and his career, saying, “I used to be an artist who never wanted to leave this world without saying f*ck you, and now I’m an artist who never wants to leave this world without saying I love you.”
Master Gardener is now playing exclusively in theaters from Magnolia Pictures.
