Composer Spotlight: Aska Matsumiya
From shoegaze pioneers The Jesus and Mary Chain to the experimental electronic innovations of Oneohtrix Point Never, this month’s spotlight playlist is a great selection of tracks handpicked by Betty composer Aska Matsumiya. Aska’s complete score for the new HBO show is streaming everywhere now!
Of her playlist and scoring process, Aska says:
“For the Betty sound palette I really wanted to incorporate vulnerability and rawness that comes with youth, energy and inspiration through experiencing fun – which is magical. I really love distorted guitar sounds in shoegaze music like in The Jesus and Mary Chain but found it fun to mix trap beats which we started calling “trap gaze.” Lots of my inspiration comes from my own musical taste and listening to music my daughter listens to whom song is on this playlist “Hypnotism” by Bebel Matsumiya. While I was working on this music I got to experience hanging around recording sessions of Vacation Forever, Very Nice Person and was very inspired of both of their sounds – new artists to look out for ! ! ! !“
