On March 11, 2003, Milan Records will release the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM, a collection of East-meets-West dance hybrids featuring cool Asian melodies (mixed by renowned DJ Bally Sagoo) and songs ranging from 80s disco to 90s electronic. Victoria Beckham (a.k.a. Mrs. Beckham and "Posh Spice") performs the song "I Wish." Other featured artists include: Blondie, Melanie C, Texas, and Partners in Rhyme featuring Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Snippets of dialogue from the film round out the disc, enabling this soundtrack to attract a widespread audience ranging from independent film buffs eagerly anticipating the film's release, to teenagers who will relate to the film's subject matter and the soundtrack's upbeat sound.
BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM tells the story of 18-year-old Jasbinder Bamra (Parminder Nagra), who is lovingly called Jess, a Sikh girl with amazing soccer talents. She dreams of playing professional soccer for the United States, and her hero is Manchester United superstar David Beckham, whose technique for curving penalty kicks around a wall of defenders inspired the film's title. When a fellow female soccer fanatic (Keira Knightley) discovers Jess playing in a pickup game, she invites her to play for a girls' school team. This doesn't sit well with Jess' traditional parents, who want her to pursue a law degree, get married and learn to cook a "full Indian dinner." Jess is forced to sneak around and hide her passion from her family, but when her extracurricular activities are discovered she must either find a way to follow the path of David Beckham and become a professional soccer player, or submit to her parents' plans.
BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM evokes the underdog, coming-of-age theme of Billy Elliot, set against the backdrop of traditional versus modern day Indian culture, with an occasional healthy dose of MTV flavor. It is reminiscent of Mira Nair's recent hit, Monsoon Wedding, in its humorous but insightful representation of strong family ties and the influence of pop culture in the Indian community, as well as in its ultra-hip music that made the Monsoon Wedding soundtrack such an extreme success, selling over 81,000 units to date.
