MOLIÈREAbout the Record
Molière. The name alone evokes a universe of incredible richness. The playwright was more than a celebrity and became the personification of his art. In 1644, Molière, not yet 22 years old, was producing and starring in his own plays. He was also debt-ridden and constantly chased by bailiffs. He was imprisoned for some time, then suddenly disappeared.
Many Molière biographies speak of the long and mysterious absence during this time in his life. What if, during this period, Molière met those that became the characters in his plays? What if he experienced the intense feelings that inspired his work? What if he encountered the woman who would give him the key to himself and impassion him like never before? In Molière, director Laurent Tirard supposes just that and examines what might have happened during this little known period. Far from cliché, Tirard plunges into the heart of Molière’s life and art, exposing how, before he became one of the world’s greatest playwrights, he was first just a man.
Frederic Talgorn’s score captures the essence and emotion of the period with distinct accuracy while maintaining a perfect classical music perspective.
